Tiger Woods - US Open Pebble Beach

Pebble Beach

Tiger Woods had a 15 shot lead going into the last hole in the 2002 US Open.  Tiger was on the 18th and final hole that hugs the coastline adjacent to the Monterrey peninsula.

Tiger had a commanding lead and after a birdie on an earlier hole, gave the golf ball to a young fan.  Unbenownst, to Tiger he only had one ball left in the bag!

Stevie Williams, Tiger's caddie,  kept the secret to himself and held his breath as Tiger teed off on the dangerous 18th hole.  If Tiger hit the ball out of bounds onto the beach, he would not be able to take a penalty and hit another shot.  Since he was without another golf ball, he would have been automatically disqualified!

Tiger went on to hit a good drive and win the Championship by the largest margin in history.  The win propelled him to historic Tiger Slam, where he held all four major championships and the same time. This feat has never been done in professional golf.

Tiger's entire career could have changed with one swing on the 18th hole at Pebble Beach, but instead of disaster he went onto become one of iconic golfers in history.
